WIC and health services managers enjoy a success
at the computer. The two managers provide agency leadership at the
Gaithersburg Solomon Health Center. Between the two major programs
and across the county, CCI sees more than 28,000 children and adults
at six accessible locations.

Message from
the Incoming Chair
Alice Barnett
An incoming Chair has the unique perspective of
viewing the year ahead and planning for agency and program success.
With 34 years of CCI history and expansion to build on, envisioning
the future affords us the opportunity to add value to what is already
in place. We get the chance to advance the effort to improve services
for healthier living.
This year will unfold with significant new initiatives
that can yield truly positive results. For several years, the Board
and management recognized unmet needs that were real barriers to
our patients trying to achieve good health. We were keenly aware
a more holistic approach would make better sense to keep and maintain
healthy life practices. In keeping our sights on the patient as
a “whole person,” we identified several areas we needed
to address to accomplish our philosophy. Next year, CCI will be
in a position to move into these areas.
First, the advent of a new women’s health
program will provide the final link in a wide array of services
for adolescent girls and women. Dr. Candace Green will begin her
practice at CCI at the Marilyn K. Freeland, R.N., Family Health
Center beginning in January. CCI is prepared to equip her exam rooms
and office for an appropriate clinical environment, and Dr. Green
will begin seeing patients for prenatal, delivery, and post-partum
visits.
Since more patients are coming to CCI from across the metro area,
CCI will open a new site as an expansion of primary care services
in Rockville. Co-located with CCI/WIC in this mid-county site, space
is dedicated for three exam rooms, a lab, and an office. A CCI family
practitioner and support staff will begin operations later this
year. Access is a primary CCI mission, and transportation is eased
for patients on the Rockville Pike major artery.
Finally, somatic care is only half the picture
of maintaining good health. The other half is behavioral care. For
the first time in more than a decade, CCI is planning to offer basic
mental health services for families, children, and adults. Already
furnished with two clinical therapy suites, the Freeland Center
will house the pilot program. CCI has arranged with the state of
Maryland for licensing and program support. Sessions will be run
by a licensed clinical social worker with a consultant psychiatrist.
With body, mind, and psyche the focus of our approach,
diagnosis, and treatment, patients will be better educated about
their own health and better able to take charge of it. We’ve
seen families eat better with WIC nutrition education, and children
stay healthier with the Vaccines for Children campaign. Looking
at each patient and participant in the big picture, as a whole person,
health initiatives stand a better chance of doing a good job in
the long run.
