WIC staff supervisors meet weekly to share and
review program requirements. Many of the staff have been with the
CCI program for several years, ensuring continuity for the highly
successful nutrition education and food supplement program. In addition
to operating the state’s largest WIC agency, the staff creates
many participant–based activities to add value and interest.
CCI/WIC offers exercise classes to address pediatric obesity, food
demonstrations for better food choices and meal planning, and an
annual “Mom and Baby Shower” to promote breastfeeding.

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
10th Anniversary
Charlene Pe-Gerharz, Director
Ten years ago, the vision of a decade of WIC service
to participants was faint and far away. In 1996, close to 7,600
program participants served by Montgomery County moved to a new
service provider – CCI/WIC. Today, CCI serves almost three
times that number; indeed, the participant level hit 20,000 in April
2006. The true success of the program lies not only in numbers served,
but also in quality of program offering and personal learning that
make a difference in the health status of our participants. Within
the 10 years of growth, there has been 10 years of creative services
development and outstanding results. Nutrition education, purposeful
response to national nutrition trends benefiting our local population,
and proactive strategies supporting high expectations for breastfeeding
are WIC priorities yielding significant outcomes. CCI/WIC has earned
a reputation as a model program and is the largest in the state
of Maryland. On to the next decade!
