POSITION SUMMARY

Operating in concert with and under the direction of a licensed physician, the graduate physician assistant performs a broad range of medical services, including, but not limited to the following:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Take medical histories and order and interpret laboratory tests and x rays, and make diagnoses.
2. Record progress notes, instruct and counsel patients, and order proper therapy as needed.
3. Write or give verbal orders for any of the following:
a) Labs
b) General patient care measures, including diet, activity, intake & output, routine vital signs.
c) Precautions such as Allergies and Isolation.
d) Various preps such as required, i.e. NPO, enemas, etc.
e) Symptomatic treatments including inhalation therapy, etc.
f) Medications may be prescribed as provided in state and federal law,
6. The physician assistant may assist or initiate care in life- threatening emergency situations.
7. In the absence of the supervising physician, the physician assistant is responsible to the alternate supervising physician (s) as designated.

Incumbents may be asked to perform other tasks not specifically written in this job description. These additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned as deemed by the Medical Director and/or Executive Director.

REQUIRED SKILLS OR ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of the principles and practice of preventive medicine.
2. Knowledge of the state and federal laws pertaining to medicine and to community health centers.
3. Knowledge of the structure and function of the community health centers.
4. Must possess a valid license to practice in the State of Maryland.
5. Must have current certification from the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants and all associated requirements for medical education, logging of class time, and retesting.
6. Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine and allied services commensurate with his/her training.
7. Must be Board Certified.
8. Ability to speak enough Spanish to examine Spanish-speaking patients and converse on basic level strongly preferred.
9. Computer literacy required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Medical/Clinical environment.
2. ADA: This position may require long periods of standing. In accordance with the American with Disabilities Act, it is possible that requirements may be modified to reasonably accommodate disabled individuals. However, no accommodations will be made which may pose serious health or safety risks to the employee or others or which impose undue hardships on the organization. This position also requires the ability to drive between clinical sites in order to provide additional coverage when needed.
