POSITION SUMMARY
The Registered Nurse will provide family planning service that include screening, testing, and counseling for sexually transmitted infections and contraception. All counseling will be done in a non-judgmental and non-threatening way, keeping in mind that patient participation is voluntary and therefore compliance with recommendations are also voluntary. The Registered Nurse will also function as the Assistant Manager of the Family Planning clinic.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I. Clinic Operation
• Help facilitate patient flow and clinic operation, especially during clinic hours.
• Interview patients to identify specific medical problems and to answer patient questions.
• Arrange referrals as necessary.
• Assist with front desk duties as needed.
• Maintain patient medical records in good order utilizing standard language and abbreviations and following accepted medical standards for charting.
• Assist with new employee training.
• Managing employee schedules; including time off requests, vacations and requesting replacement staff when necessary.
• Assisting with Swipe Clock management at the end of each pay period.
• Assisting with ordering clinic supplies in a timely manner.
• Assisting to maintain the appearance of the clinic; including exam rooms, the clinic restroom, front desk, and those areas jointly used by health services and WIC staff.
• Assist with collecting data and generating needed reports as assigned.
• Attend health fairs and other clinic events as requested.
• Attend staff meetings.
II. Medical Services
• Assist with tracking and reviewing lab results, and notifying patients in a timely manner.
• Upon a verbal or written order from a supervising medical provider, treat minor gynecological and medical conditions including, but not limited to vaginitis, urinary tract infections, cervicitis, parasites and lesions.
• Upon a verbal or written order from a supervising medical provider, treat sexually transmitted infections in women and men.
• Providing contraceptive and other counseling in a non-judgmental and respectful manner.
• Assess patient need and risk concerning the different contraceptive options. Providing recommendations based on this assessment and dispensing contraception accordingly (with a verbal or written order from a supervising medical provider).
• Perform laboratory procedures including urinalysis, wet mounts, etc.
• Counsel patients in areas of abnormal cytology, DES exposure, and involved contraceptive problems.
• Provide quality customer service at all times.
• Work cooperatively with staff, Medical Director, Associate Medical Director and Administration.
• Work within the policies and procedures of Family Planning as approved by Medical Director and the Department of Health and Human Services.
• Keep abreast of the family planning literature and evidence-based medicine related to clinical role.
• Properly log and follow-up abnormal Pap smears, abnormal labs and high risk referrals.
• Assist with reportable infectious disease reporting to the appropriate Health Department.
Requirements: Specific Job Skills
Requires advanced ability to read, write, speak and understand English/Spanish. Work requires continuously using problem analysis, decision making, and independent judgment, the use of discretion, creativity, mentoring, counseling, teamwork, interpersonal skills, presentation skills, and evaluation skills. Professional nursing skills including an advanced skill in charting efficiencies and requirements is necessary. The physical ability to stand for long periods of time, talk, listen, write, and sit intermittently is required. Work requires occasional bending and stooping. Must be able to occasionally lift, push and/or move 25 pounds, operate a computer including keyboard, multi-line phone and occasionally work in excess of 8 hours per day or 40 hours/week.
Required Knowledge, Experience or Licensure/Registration
• BLS Certification
• Clinical experience preferred, preferably in family planning, women's health or an acute care setting
• Computer skills required.
• Experience working in a multi-cultural setting.
• Ability to organize, solve problems and multi task.
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
• Sitting, standing and /or walking for more then eight (8) hours per day.
• Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
• OSHA Category 1.
• The employee will be working within a controlled enclosed environment daily.
• Cell phones should never be used at the front desk or while seeing patients.
• Scrubs or other professional attire is required while in the clinic setting. Lab coat is optional.
• Nose piercings should be removed or properly covered while working.
• Tongue piercings should be removed while working.
• Proper and professional grooming is expected at all times.
