CCI Dedicates Marilyn K. Freeland, R.N., Family Health Center Celebrating Marilyn Freeland’s life and exemplary leadership and volunteerism to Community Clinic, her family (pictured here) and many friends gathered for a fitting tribute, as the Takoma Park Health Center was dedicated in her name on May 25, 2005. Marilyn volunteered as a nurse for CCI in the late 1970s and early 1980s, often working many more hours than her assigned shifts at the original CCI-Rockville health center, now closed. She gave her time in leadership positions, as well, serving on committees and later as Chairperson of the Board of Directors from 1979-83. During her term as Chair, CCI was awarded its first contract from Montgomery County to provide 20 hours of pediatric care in the Silver Spring location. Marilyn also played a critical role in negotiating a financial agreement with the City of Rockville which resulted in sufficient revenue to hire staff and begin operations. On June 21, 2000, Marilyn received the honor of first member appointed to the CCI Board of Directors Emeritus. After a long illness, she passed away in January 2005. At the dedication, Marilyn was remembered for
her great sense of humor, ability to get things done, and personal
commitment to improving the lives of individuals and families in
medical need. Recognition of her gifts to CCI was bestowed by the
U.S. House of Representatives, the Maryland Governor’s Office,
the Maryland State House and Senate, and the City of Takoma Park.
