What if I am late for my appointment?

You may be seen if you are up to 15 minutes late for your Certification or Recertification appointment. After 15 minutes you may be asked to reschedule your appointment.

If you are scheduled for a Check Pick-Up Class you are allowed a 5 minute grace period. After 5 minutes you will have to wait for the next available class or you can reschedule your appointment for a different day.

What is Check Pick-Up (CPU)?

Check Pick-Up is a nutrition education class. You will receive your WIC checks at the end of the class. After the class you are encouraged to schedule your next appointment. Most Check Pick-Up classes are 30 minutes, but some classes may be longer.

What do I do if I need to change my WIC appointment?

If you schedule an appointment that you are not able to attend, please feel free to call your local WIC agency. WIC agency phone numbers can be found at the bottom of your WIC folder or click here (link to contact/location page). It is better to call and change your appointment if you know you will be unable to attend, than it is to miss your appointment and reschedule.

If you miss your WIC appointment, you can call or visit your local WIC agency to reschedule your appointment.

How do I get in contact with my WIC local agency?

When you call your local WIC agency you may be prompted to leave a message. WIC staff will respond to your message as soon as possible. When leaving a message, please state your name, phone number, if possible your Participant ID number (a 9 digit number found on the front of your WIC folder next to the name of the participant on WIC) and the reason for your call. Each WIC agency receives a high call volume, so we are unable to track missed calls without a message. Please leave only one message, repeat calls will not assure a faster response.

Why do I have to go to a class to get my WIC checks?

The purpose of the WIC program is to provide you with nutrition education to assist with healthy growth and development of you and your children. The WIC checks are a benefit that is provided to assist in this process. Each class is carefully developed to help you gain more knowledge of various nutrition topics that are important for the proper development of you and your children. Classes change quarterly, so you will not attend the same general Check Pick-Up class twice.

What do I do if I am unable find my WIC folder?

The WIC folder is your ID, without your folder we cannot issue you WIC checks. Sometimes it is possible to misplace your folder. Before contacting your local WIC agency to say that your folder is lost, call the grocery store where you last shopped, look in your car and in your home. If you are unable to find your folder, come to your local WIC agency with a picture ID and we will replace your folder.

What do I do if I lost my WIC checks?

Unfortunately, lost WIC checks cannot be replaced. WIC checks are like money, so keep them in a safe place. WIC checks can only be replaced or changed if they are brought into the WIC office. WIC checks can be exchanged for new checks if they have visible damage.

What if I only want some of the foods on my WIC checks?

It is okay to use your WIC checks even if you do not use everything on the checks.

Example: If your checks say 2 gallons of milk, 1 dozen eggs, and 36oz of cereal and you only want the eggs, the cereal and one gallon of milk, it is great that you still are using your checks.

Keep in mind that you will not receive your check back for the remaining amount, and you will not receive change.

With the new food package changes, starting October 1st, WIC staff will be able to modify your food package to remove foods that you do not want or feel will not be used. Please let WIC staff know so we can change your checks accordingly.

Why did I receive a Sanction Letter?

If you receive a Sanction letter in the mail it could be an education letter, a warning letter, suspension letter or disqualification from the WIC program. Sanction letters are mailed to the head of household informing you that either you or a proxy has broken the rules of the WIC program. For most offenses you will receive an education letter for the 1st offense, followed by a warning letter for a repeat offense. On the 3rd repeat offense you will be suspended or disqualified from the WIC program. Your children will not be disqualified from the WIC program. In the event that you are suspended or disqualified, you may designate a proxy to attend WIC appointments and go to the grocery store with the WIC checks for your children. The amount of time for your suspension from the WIC program may vary.

Common reasons for receiving a Sanction letter:

1. WIC checks being used before or after the dates printed on the check.
2. WIC checks not signed
3. Participant or proxy abuse of WIC staff or WIC Program benefits.

The best way to avoid receiving a Sanction is to read and follow the WIC program rights and responsibilities. Make sure that any designated proxies are also informed of the rights and responsibilities of the WIC program. If a designated proxy is not following the rules it still counts against the head of household. You can change your designated proxy at any time by visiting into your local WIC agency.
